BIODEGRADABLE TEA SACHET PDF Print E-mail

Having encouraged Harney & Sons Tea to switch their tea sachet from nylon to a biodegradable material, Engineering for the Earth is pleased that Harney & Sons will be transitioning to PLA, a biodegradable material made from corn, by the end of 2010.   We continue to work with Harney & Sons on improving and reducing their product packaging.

Having encouraged Harney & Sons Tea to switch their tea sachet from nylon to a biodegradable material, Engineering for the Earth is pleased that Harney & Sons will be transitioning to PLA, a biodegradable material made from corn, by the end of 2010.

Harney & Sons has committed to modifying an entire product line to make their product more environmentally friendly.  Due to constraints with the machine  that makes the sachets, a biodegradeable plastic is being used to replace the nylon material currently used.  This material does not impart flavor into the tea and meets the specs of thier machine saving the company the cost of aquiring a new machine.  Since the comany needs only to change the material used to make the sachets, the companies production will not be affected by the sweith to the new material.

With this success in our pockets, we continue to work with Harney & Sons on improving and reducing their product packaging.  We will be helping generate ideas for alternative packaging from the warehouse, to the retail shelves, to the consumers house.  Working together we will be generating a life cycle plan for the product and the packaging with the goals of reducing and recycling.
